Intestines are the very important organ in the gastrointestinal tract of the digestive system. They are long, regular tube running from stomach to anus. Intestines play a very important role in digestion, they absorb the juices and essential nutrients from the food than those nutrients are supplied to the blood to be distributed in other organs for good health. There are two types of intestines namely small intestine and large intestine, it includes rectum also. Now let us know some interesting facts about intestines.
The small intestine is about 20 feet in length and about an inch in diameter. It is three times the length of your body; in fact it is a longest part of digestive system. Food stays in small intestine for about four hours. This is because our body absorbs 90% of the nutrients through small intestine in our blood. Bacteria found in intestines can boost your immune system; this is an interesting fact about intestine. Actually there are small finger like projections in small intestine which helps in absorbing the nutrients from the food material. Small intestine is the part of the stomach which connects to the large intestine. Small intestine consist of an elastic and soft tube which is made up of muscles and membranes, these are tightly contorted in the abdominal cavity. When the food is chewed it enters the stomach where it the gastric juices makes it liquid which can be easy to digest than comes the role of intestine, liquid food is easier to absorb by small intestine. This mixture of food is than pushed forward by the peristaltic movement which contracts from duodenum toward ileum. These movements are not felt by our body but in the condition of overeating, you will feel the sensation of pain and also in case of food poisoning we will fell pain and spasms. Generally toxic food causes diarrhea and vomiting due to irritation of stomach and intestine.
Interesting Facts about Intestine
Let us tell you some more interesting facts about intestine. The stomach contains acid like chlorhydric acid and some more digestive enzymes which make the food extremely acidic but small intestine contains bicarbonate and alkaline chemicals which neutralizes the acidity of food. These secretions are synthesized by pancreas, gut’s wall and liver. General function of these chemicals is to break down food in small particles which will be easily absorbed by blood and circulate all over the body. The walls of intestines are thin but as they are folded thus there surface is large. Nutrients which are absorbed from the food goes into the blood vessels which are collected by a large vein attached to the liver, from here the nutrients get distributed to different parts of the body but the fat do not pass into the blood, but it passes into the lymph. It also does not pass through liver.
Now it’s time to know some interesting facts about intestines but the large one. The large intestine is not longer than small intestine but it has larger width than the small intestine. Large intestine is 5feet long. It consists of six different parts in it such as cecum, ascending colon, and rectum. Main function of large intestine is to absorb water from the food material and excrete the solid waste material. Here also peristaltic movement works which pushes the food material rather waste material forward to excrete it out of the body. Usually the waste material is solid because most of the water is absorbed by the intestine while food material travels through it.
Some more interesting facts about intestine are here like if we imagine small intestine as a simple tube then it will have the surface area of only ½ square meter but due to the presence of small figure like projections which are known as villi its surface area is 200 square meters which can be a size of a tennis court. Small as well as large intestines consist of muscle in them which are called smooth muscle which helps to move the food through the intestines. The names of these two intestines are according to their width but not according to their length as the length of small intestine is larger than the large intestine but large intestine is wider than small intestine.
